USAAF Bomber Formations Jan 44

36 Plane Group Formation

In Jan 44 the availability of large numbers of escort fighters changed the terms on which the air battles over Germany were fought and reduced the need for concentrated defensive firepower. A 12 plane squadron formation was devised, the lead machine being equipped with radar bombing aids, which were still in short supply. Three of these squadron formations made up a 36-aircraft group, with the groups following each other at four-mile intervals.
