Own results not observed. Many fires seen around PFF markers. Very heavy and concentrated attack. Landed at Coltishall. Returning from operational sortie during which aircraft damaged by enemy action. Hydraulics for undercarriage and flaps unserviceable. Pilot hand damaged. No airspeed registering. Port engine not functioning properly. Fuel tanks registered zero. Stability of aircraft reduced. On calling May Day permission to land at Melbourne. Pumped down wheels by emergency method, judged airspeed by doing different throttle settings and revs. Did full cockpit drill. Ordered crew to crash stations. Omitted use of flaps and concentrated on keeping aircraft above stalling speed. Must have crossed boundary at excessive speed, thus aircraft floated nearly full length of runway before touching down. Kept aircraft straight. Switched off engines, applied brakes. Aircraft stopped 100-200 yards beyond end of runway. Part C. General remarks (including any recommendation with regard to personnel, training, airframes, engines, accessories, etc., and notes of any action taken as a result of this incident) A. Incident occurred at night, on return from operations. Drem lighting system in use. B. Aircraft had been damaged by enemy action, causing faulty engine (port), no airspeed indicator, also possibility of running out of petrol made pilot afraid to carry out overshoot. Pilot had a case of engine failure a few days prior to this and realised danger of attempting overshoot procedure on poor engine. C. Looks as if a fair job was done of getting the aircraft down at all under very adverse circumstances.
